The Wolves - Prelim. Groundplans

A series of groundplans presented to the director after our first design meeting. Feedback at this point further narrowed the design options.

The Wolves - Initial Ramp Design

The Wolves - Initial Ramp Design

This Vectorworks rendering originated from the selected groundplan but added a curved ramp upstage to help the field "continue" and was presented for further consideration

The upstage black netting was modeled after divider nets typically found in indoor soccer arenas. It's size and orientation was meant to enclose the space and characters in a cage-like way but it also served as a backstop for balls kicked upstage.

To enhance the illusion that the field recedes into the background I added a fish-eye perspective curve to the upstage ramp. This became the final approved design.

Turf Prep

Turf Prep

The TD found used (faded) turf at a reasonable price and it was re-painted to the specified color offsite.

Because the director wanted the space to be a "warmup" area and not the field itself, all lines were removed from the used turf.

The Wolves - Benches

The Wolves - Benches

The two benches were modeled after a research image approved by the director and were shop-built.

I included two types of practical lighting fixtures to bring the audience into the air dome with the action. Industrial scoops and diagonal fluorescent strips created an arc under which both the audience and action were enclosed.

I collaborated with the lighting designer in coming up with a treatment for the upstage wall of the theater. We decided to mimic the ribs of an air dome while keeping the functionality of a cyc for lighting purposes.

Designer's Statement:

For this production, we wanted to maintain the feel of an indoor, air dome soccer field, stretching to "infinity", while making the audience feel as though they were close enough to share in the very personal exchanges between the characters.  The real astroturf continued upstage of a divider net in a warped perspective ramp and was meant to create the illusion of a field which stretches into the distance while never exceeding the boundaries of the air dome itself.  Practical industrial and fluorescent lighting fixtures were strategically placed over the playing area and around the audience to create an all-encompassing arena feel where audience members could feel as though they were inside the dome with the players, eavesdropping unnoticed from a short distance.  The set dressing was intentionally blended, spare and utilitarian, giving plenty of literal playing space for the soccer players while not creating visual distractions from the action.
